Salt. Why did she smell salt? The small black female wolf had been traveling alone for many days now, and a strange smell penetrated the air with such force, it was in desperate need of being discovered. And so, the little wolf, set out to find the source. Korlu bounded through forests, up mountains, and over large plains of black rock. The wolf had not known she was on a volcano because the thought never occurred to her. She didn’t know what a volcano was, only because she wasn’t reared near one. It had taken half a day’s running and the sun was at it’s highest point in the sky when she reached it. The ocean. She was in shock, but gave a cry of excitement. She ran down the hill she was on onto a rocky outcrop. There was a sharp drop off, and she pulled short before she fell off.
Korlu was fascinated. Her blue eyes gazed at the crashing waves, admiring the beauty of the rolling sea. The spray tickled her black nose and she wagged her tail, leaning closer over the rocky outcrop. Never had she seen a body of water this large, but she followed her nose. Water occasionally rushed up the rock wall and covered her feet, which startled her at first, but then she started to play with it. Anytime it jumped up to meet her, she would leap into the air before coming down and splashing in the water before it fled back to the sea. Oh, why hadn’t she been here before? Why wasn’t anyone here for that matter? This place was beautiful, and it smelled so strange. Korlu turned her nose to the wind, sniffing for any scents of possible friends.
While distracted for this one second, a large wave shot up over the ledge Korlu was on. The sudden embrace of water made Korlu give a loud, high pitched wolf scream as she felt herself fall. She fell on a sharp ledge, just barely big enough to hold the small wolf. She was closer to the water, and in greater danger then she had been. Her paws were bleeding from being cut as she had tried to catch herself on the rocky wall, but due to the waves, it caused the rock to before sharp and rigid. The small black wolf trembled terribly as she tried to hold herself against the wall, being hit with wave after wave. She wasn’t sure how she managed not to fall down the 6 meters to the crashing sea, but she knew there was no way she could get back up.
Korlu barked loudly in fear and distress, crying out in pain anytime she was hit with water, the salt stinging her cuts. Surely someone had to hear her! The shaking wolf looked up, searching for someway to climb up, but there were none. She was so close, but far enough to were no one would pull her up, and far enough to not be able to jump. The only way was down, and that option didn’t suit with the frightened wolf. Korlu continued to cry out, calling for someone to help the distressed female.

Útíradiel was floating on a breeze above her companion that was below here a few feet above the waves thanks to the spirits she had called to help him cross the vast expanse to the island of Palekaiko. Útíradiel had heard so many wolves comment on how beautiful it was and all the wondrous things that could be found there.
Slightly folding her wings in, she flew down to where Beriogelir was, being carried across the waves by the spirits. You could just barely tell that there was something there holding him up. It looked like a see-through silvery cloth that was cradling a large cougar.
"You doing all right?" Útíradiel called down to Beriogelir. She knew that he hated to be carried, even more so by spirits, but it was the only way that they were both going to get to the island.
"I'm fine," Beriogelir called up to Útíradiel. She couldn't really come down too far lest her wings get wet and take her ability to fly. Then they'd both be stuck here being carried.
"OK, just let me know when you see land," she called back before heading back up.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A few hours later, Útíradiel was thoroughly exhausted and was flying pretty low. Not low enough to get wet, but low enough that she was only a few feet above Beriogelir.
"Útíradiel," Beriogelir called out to his companion, the tip of his tail dragging in the water.
"Yes, Beriogelir?" Útíradiel answered, her voice sleepy. The only thing keeping her afloat was the fact that the ocean was full of breezes that kept her aloft and that those breezes were very cold.
"I see land," he said, his voice almost too tired to sound excited, but excited it was. He was glad to be off this freezing ocean and to be done with these spirits that were carrying him. He was grateful and all for them, but that didn't mean he had to enjoy using them.
"Excellent," Útíradiel said, her voice sounding full of hope and excitement.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Landing on the shore, Útíradiel and Beriogelir almost collapsed on themselves as soon as their paws touched the warm sand.
"That was possibly the longest flight I've ever taken," Útíradiel said, her tongue hanging out of her mouth as she panted, Beriogelir doing the same. His journey had only been exhausting because the spirits needed energy to take him across, so they naturally took his.
They had only been here a few moments, but they already heard cries of distress coming from somewhere in the distance. It sounded like it was coming from the cliffs on the far side of the beach, so that's the way that the two headed.
"Hello? Where are you?" Beriogelir called out as they stood above the cliff.
"I think I found her!" Útíradiel called back to Beriogelir over the waves. She had pin pointed the location of the she-wolf from the sound of her voice, though it was sketchy do the the fact that her voice bounced off the rocks and it was half-way drowned out by the crashing of the waves.

Korlu’s ears twitched frantically as she tried to listen above the roaring sea. A wave shoved her against the rocky wall, cutting her cheek. The salt stung, but the pain was dull due to the coursing adrenaline in her body. The young wolf looked to her left and right, trying to find another ledge she could jump to. There was one to her left, but it was too far to jump to. Korlu gave a loud yelp, calling for someone. Anyone.
Right now, the sea didn’t seem as fantastic anymore. It was malicious, or so it seemed to be. For crying out loud, it just tried to drag her out and drown her! Did it have a mind of its own? The thought of that made Korlu even more frightened. She pulled herself into a ball, pressing hard against the wall when another wave came. It hit her,
The black wolf pricked her ears up when she heard something. Was that a voice? Korlu started barking and whining at the same time, half excited, and half horrified. How was she going to get up? “Here!” She cried desperately as she got struck full force by another wave. This one pulled her half way off, but she pulled herself back up. “I’m over here!” She called, looking up hopefully.

Beriogelir finally spotted the little she-wolf. She was almost pulled out to sea and was being cut up on the rocks.
"It looks to be a large pup!" Beriogelir called back to Útíradiel who was already starting the ritual to get the pup up the cliff. Hopefully the spirits would be kind and bring the poor child up without overly exhausting her like they sometimes did.
"Don't talk to her!" Útíradiel barked at Beriogelir. "She needs to focus on staying alive until I can get to her," she said as she finished the ritual, a cut on her face appearing. So they decided to take blood this time. Hopefully it's enough. she thought, sending the spirits to get the pup.
The spirits floated down to the she-wolf, waiting for her to give them permission. They could do nothing if she didn't. While Útíradiel had forgotten this, Beriogelir didn't.
"Give them permission to help!" Beriogelir called down to her. "They're not going to harm you! Trust me!" he called over the roar of the waves. Beriogelir had learned very quickly to trust the silvery cloth-like creatures, lest they take offense and hinder you instead of help.

Korlu would have been mad to have been called a pup had she not been dangling off a cliff. But, that was the least of her worries. She strained to hear her saviors, listening to two distinct voices. She pictured them to be wolves, but when their scent hit her nose, she was shocked to smell a cougar. She was about to speak up when a strange silvery thing appeared in front of her. Her mouth clamped shut with fear, pressing back, thinking they would cause her harm. But a voice from above told her to accept it.
Korlu, still shaking from the cold, and fear, looked at the foreign things. She gave a shaky nod, “I give you permission,” She managed to choke out. What else was she supposed to do? Strike up a conversation with the thing and see if it’ll help. The wolf stopped pressing herself against the wall, trying to be of help as the things got closer.

Útíradiel felt the spirits wrap themselves around the pup and slowly lift her up, trying their best not run into the sharp cliff walls. They were being blown all over the place, but the spirits did their best.
"Just keep holding on!" Útíradiel yelled, more cuts appearing on her face and body. They weren't very deep, just enough for the spirits to take the energy from her blood as it flowed. Útíradiel didn't want to have the young she-wolf come up drained and exhausted, so she willing bore the pain.
Beriogelir roared in triumph as the pup was place on the ground away from the cliff. The spirits slowly dissipated as Útíradiel stopped the tracing and walked over to the young girl.
"Are you OK, little one?" Útíradiel asked, Beriogelir coming up and standing beside her. Beriogelir took a step closer and gently nudged the small wolf with his large head.
"Hey. You're safe now," he said with a smile.

Korlu tried not to squirm when the strange things embraced her. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to imagine something else was happening. Of course it didn’t work. Korlue heard her saviors yelling words of encouragement, and by the time she knew it, she was touching the ground. Instantly she ran further from the cliff, not wanting to risk falling off again. She may not be that lucky. She stopped and dropped her body to the ground, lowering her head in a submissive way as the wolf and cougar approached her. The last thing she wanted to do was insult her rescuers, but when the feline rubbed his head on her, she jumped up, wagging her tail fiercely.
“Yes, yes I’m fine thanks to you!” She cried joyfully. She didn't even feel the pain from the cuts on her paws. Never had she appreciated life this much before, and she relished in the fact that she was alive. Acting in a typical passive way, she nudged the wolf’s chin and gave her an affectionate lick. She then turned to the large cat. She had never seen a cougar up close before and she sniffed him excitedly, whimpering in pure joy. “I owe you my life,” she said, stepping back and addressing them in a more formal way, even though she was wiggling with glee.
“I will be forever grateful, thank you! I will tell my children about this day! About the mighty couple—” She suddenly realized she had forgotten to introduce herself and get their names. “My name is Korlu,” she said quickly, planting her rump on the ground. "May I know the names of my rescuers?"

Útíradiel was so very happy to see that the girl-child was alive and well. She had a few scrapes and cuts, but other than that, she seemed perfectly healthy.
"We are just happy to have been in the area when it happened, lest you have gotten dragged out to sea," Útíradiel said, a smile gracing her face.
Looking over at Beriogelir, she gently swatted him with her tail, a normal signal saying that she wanted to know what the wolf in front of her looked like. The only reason she could tell it was a female wolf was due to the scent that she gave off. But before Beriogelir could say anything though, the pup introduced herself.
"I am Útíradiel and this is Beriogelir," Útíradiel said, nodding to Beriogelir. "He is my companion and guide, no need to fear either of us. Though, would you mind describing yourself to me so he does not have to?" she added with a smile. She knew that Beriogelir would do a great job, and would fill in anything that the girl forgot to mention about herself.

Korlu nodded eagerly, finding the names unique and suiting. She tilted her head, describe herself? A sudden wave of embarrassment washed over her. The young wolf hadn’t even noticed that the wolf couldn’t see. “Well I, uhm…” For some reason she looked down at herself. “I’m black all over, and have a small white dot on my chest. My eyes are dark blue and…” The wave hit her again, harder this time. Did Útíradiel even know what those colors looked like?! Korlu slapped herself mentally.
“I was the runt of my littler, so I’m small, yet I do not see myself a pup. I’m two summers old, in fact. I guess you can say I have long fur…” She trailed off. Never before had she met a blind wolf, and never had she had to describe herself before. She glanced down at herself again, thinking of what else to say.

Útíradiel laughed lightly at the small wolf's description of herself.
"You sound beautiful, though unsure. You do know what you look like, no?" Útíradiel asked, laughter in her voice. She wasn't sure why a wolf would be unsure of how oneself looked, though it was possible. She was one to talk. She had become blind before her coat had fully developed and she could only hope that it was as pretty as Beriogelir had told her.
Shaking out her wings and horns, Útíradiel sat down in front of the girl. "I would like to apologize for calling you a pup. I was quite unaware, as you might have guessed," she said with a smile and a tilt of her head.
"Stop teasing the poor thing," Beriogelir scolded Útíradiel. He knew that the she-wolf was only baiting the girl. She wanted to see how the girl would react, but that was just how she got to know people.

Korlu shifted her paws, “I know what I look like, I’ve just never had to explain it. I never really paid much attention to my appearance simply because looks do not make the wolf.” She gave a smile and looked down, proud of herself. She was confident in her answer, yet was unsure of how to answer Útíradiel’s comment.
She glanced at the cougar once before speaking up, “I harbor no negative feelings for it. I’m used to being mistaken as a pup, no matter the circumstances, whether it be blindness or arrogance.” Arrogant may have not been the best word to use in this situation, but it was the best she could come up with on the spot. She offered a smile, but it vanished quickly when the fact Útíradiel was blind hit her again. How could she keep forgetting? Perhaps it was because she had never met a blind wolf before, but like she said, looks didn’t matter, nor did deformities or disabilities. Korlu judged on actions. You can’t judge a book by it’s cover, but you can judge the contents that lies within.

Útíradiel was becoming slightly confused as she listened to the wolf react to everything. She could hear her lips pull against her teeth as she smiled and then relax as she frowned.
"Is something troubling you, dear?" Útíradiel asked the little wolf. She was only a year older, but somehow, Útíradiel felt much older than the wolf in front of her.
Beriogelir, on the other hand, was very well aware why the wolf was having trouble with her expression. It was hard to get over the fact that while Útíradiel may not be able to see physically, she could see mentally. She would take what she heard around her and create a picture of it in her mind. It wasn't always right, but a lot of the time, she 'saw' more than Beriogelir even though she was blind.

Korlu glanced at the cougar once, giving him an almost desperate look. She was put into a situation that she didn’t know how to control, and this made her nervous. She had never come across someone with a disability before, and meeting Útíradiel made her think about how many other wolves were like that out there. “Nothing is wrong, Útíradiel, it’s just—pardon me for commenting on this—I’m having a rather difficult time with your sight impairment. Please understand that I am neither critiquing nor judging, but I have never dealt with a blind friend, and therefore do not know how to show…emotion other than using my voice.” She didn’t mean any harm by her words and hoped she didn’t feel offended.

Útíradiel wasn't surprised by Korlu's confusion about showing emotions. Beriogelir and her pack had had the same problem. She simply listened to how the face of the particular wolf she was talking to sounded as it moved.
"No fear dear. I merely listen to how your face and tail move as you show your emotions," she said with a friendly grin. She knew how hard it often was to deal with someone with a disability, so she normally didn't take offense to others, especially when they were being so honest like Korlu.
"So what were you doing on the cliff? That's a very dangerous place, even for one of your size," Beriogelir said, his voice full of concern. He was a year older than Útíradiel, so he felt that he needed to be a protector for everyone younger than him.

Korlu gave a wag of her tail at Útíradiel’s response. She returned the smile and looked at Beriogelir when he spoke up. She shrugged, “I’ve haven’t been on my own for very long and was drawn by the smell of salt. I’ve never smelled it so strong and concentrated before.” She turned her head and looked toward the ocean, smiling inwardly. “I’ve never seen the ocean either, and so I was curious. I didn’t know it could be so dangerous.”
This was true and completely obvious. The ocean had nearly killed her just because she was curious, and it brought up the idea that maybe it was alive. The crashing waves almost looked like they were trying to steal her life on purpose. This new found fear made her stand and scoot further away from the sea, even though she was well out of reach. She turned back, "So why are you here?"

Útíradiel was fascinated by this little wolf. She was a piece of work. She still didn't know how she had ended up on the side of the cliff, as the waves almost never got that high unless there was a storm. Útíradiel couldn't smell any rain, nor could she feel any excess moisture in the air. Giving an mental shrug to that, she just smiled.
"We're here on vacation. Well, kind of. I've been searching for my brother for years, but I've yet to find him. He's very illusive when he wants to be," Útíradiel said, murmuring the last part to herself. She was sad that Maji had been kicked out of their pack, and she would never forgive her father for only making it worse but trying to stop her from going to him to comfort him. She hated the fact that he might be lost to her forever, but she would never give up. Even if she had to travel the entire world in search of him.
"Don't worry, we'll find him eventually," Beriogelir said, rubbing his head against hers. Útíradiel she smiled softly and rubbed her head on his back. She really appreciated the support, and the fact that Beriogelir had actually stayed with her the 2 years that she had been searching. But, while she hated not searching, she knew that they both needed a break, which was what brought them here.

Korlu tilted her head in curiosity when they spoke of being on vacation. Vacation from what? It didn't matter much really, especially to Korlu. I guess you could say she was on a vacation from life? Just here to relax, explore, and hopefully not die. The young wolf was fascinated when Útíradiel said she was looking for her brother. Did that mean he was here somewhere, was that how the two found her? Who knew, it wasn't her business and she didn't ask. Beriogelir spoke up and Korlu watched quietly as they rubbed on each other, almost feeling like she was intruding. Should she excuse herself and continue on her journey? The little wolf stood, an idea coming across her mind. "Beriogelir, Útíradiel, I owe the both of you my life. Nothing I can do or offer could compare, but I can try my best. I'd like to help you search for your brother, if you don't mind."occ; Word count; 160 Muse; 30.4% Tags; Marie Anne! ((I have the feeling this thread will be ending shortly! ))

Beriogelir smiled at the little she-wolf.
"Of course you may travel with us. For now, however, we're just gonna search this little island and then head back to the mainland. Speaking of which, how did you come to be on this island?" he asked, his head tilting slightly as he asked his question.
Útíradiel wasn't very surprised that the fae wanted to travel with them, if just for a little while. The only problem she might have is that if the girl hindered instead of helped. Then Útíradiel would have to kick her out of their little group, but Útíradiel didn't see that happening, so she was perfectly content letting her come along.
"Come, we can talk and listen as we go back to the beach. I'm tired and would like a least a little bit of rest," she said briskly, not taking no for an answer as she started walking towards the beach with its warm sand and soft shady patches of grass.

Korlu wagged her tail quite fiercly when Beriogelir agreed that she could come with them. Looking down as gave her chest a lick, scrunching her face up at the salty taste. Her ears lifted at his question and she looked at him. How did she get here? How did she get here? The sudden thought left her stunned. She wasn’t sure how she had gotten here, and it confused her. “I…” She trailed off and thought hard. “I don’t know.”
The little black wolf glanced up, breaking away from her thoughts when the other female spoke. She nodded and started after her, her tail giving wags every now and then. She swallowed and looked at the cougar before speaking to Útíradiel. “Why are you looking for your brother? Has he done something wrong?” She didn’t want to intrude on any private things, but she was curious. And if she were going to help, she wanted to get as much information as possible.
