The dens are located at the base of a steep, wooded slope and are deliberately dug among the tree roots, which keep water form seeping into the caverns and help them maintain their shape. Whenever a new wolf joins the pack, the whole pack pitches in to dig the newcomer a den. There is also a larger den, a bit removed from the rest, that is used in whelping season by young pups and their mothers.
