"Did I ever mention to you how terrified I am of heights? Because I really, really hate heights..."
Midori flicked his ears in annoyance, and fought the urge to shake himself vigorously, thus sending the tiny white ermine huddled between his shoulder blades off over the edge of the bridge-like arch.
"I mean, sure, the view is pretty, and that's great, but... well... it's an awfully slim little bit of rock, isn't it..? And I really, really, really would hate to slip and fall. Well, I mean, I'd hate for you to slip and fall, because if you fell, I'd fall too, and- Midori? Hey, Midori?! Why did we stop?!"
The black wolf took a couple of shuffling steps closer to the edge, peering out over the trees with bright green eyes. His twin tails swished idly. A faint puff of wind made the rainbow swirls across his body look like they were running water, flowing through his fur.
"It looks like rain, doesn't it?" he commented airily, "That would make this rock awfully slippery, don't you think, Rouge?" he turned a sharp-toothed grin to his tiny companion, and Rouge instantly huddled deeper into his friend's fur.
"Let's just hurry up, please?" he whimpered. Midori chuckled and continued on, relishing in the silence. However, within a few moments, Rouge began chattering again.
"So, say you decide to go home someday?" he asked, "I mean, an ermine is one thing. Plenty of wolves love ermine. We're such a cute little race, just lookit me! But... well... you know how folks get when they learn about... ya know?"
"My my, that storm cloud is getting awfully close, isn't it?" there was just enough of a growl in the sentence to warn Rouge of the danger, but he plowed on anyways.
"I mean, I don't mind it, but, admittedly, I didn't really know what to say when I found out you were ga-" A crackle of lightning split the sky, cutting him off. Midori tossed a quick word of thanks to whatever gods or spirits there might be, and dashed off of the arc, ducking into the cover of what smelled like some wolf's old den just as the rain began to pour. Rouge slid off of Midori's back, shaking.
"Heh...heh... nice timing, buddy... That was pretty close..."
Midori turned around and lay down, offering a faint snarl in response. Rouge scampered around the small space, sniffing the corners.
"Hey, you don't think somebody still lives here, do you?" he asked. A light snore reached his ears, and he scampered back to peer at Midori. Fast asleep.
The ermine ruffled his friend's ears fondly.
"I guess I'm taking first watch, then?" he said to the air in general, and settled down to watch the rain.
