It was white. There was nothing, but white. There wasn’t ground or sky. Koa was in emptiness. The bright endless color was blinding, and Koa narrowed his eyes. He looked around, lifting his head and scenting the air. His ears twitched nervously. There was no sound, not even the sound of air going in and out of his lungs. Koa blinked and started to walk, each step unsure. He moved slowly, not sure what he was walking on. The texture was unlike anything he had felt. It was smooth, when his paw touched it, but when he put weight his leg, it felt as if he were stepping on smooth river rocks.
Koa…
The white wolf turned at the mournful voice, his tail rising slightly. He flexed his muscles under his thick fur, when he saw another figure in the distance. Koa’s lips rose and he flashed his fangs, letting out a guttural growl. Something wasn’t right. The creature had the outline of a wolf. It looked like a wolf, a black wolf. The being’s silhouette started to waver, and it disappeared, leaving behind a black puddle where it had been standing. Koa stood in amazement, his ears perking forward with aggressiveness. He barked a warning when the figure reappeared, not more then 10 yards from him. “Who are you?” He snarled, feeling the hackles on his back raising; a simple form of self defense, trying to make himself seem bigger so the thing would leave him alone.
By now, Koa was definite the being was a wolf, and it put him on edge even more. He growled when the canine walked closer to him. It left a trail of black paw prints, standing out against the white. Each step looked painful, full of misery, yet at the same time, it looked dangerous. A surge of fire crackled under his skin, and he clenched his teeth in pain. Each time the wolf set down a paw, the burning sensation grew worse until he felt as if he were truly on fire. Now the wolf was right in front of him, and Koa swallowed hard when he saw the wolf had no eyes. Just empty eye sockets, with no color.
The black wolf opened its pure white mouth, revealing rows and rows of serrated black teeth, with a long thin black tongue that slipped out of its mouth. Koa barked now in fear, unable to lift his legs off the ground to run. He lowered himself quickly, tail tucked between his legs, submitting to the creature. The beast looked down, letting out a strange, horrifying snarl, and it lunged at him.
Koa jerked awake, sitting up and panting hard. He looked around through narrowed eyes, disoriented. Where was he? It wasn’t very bright out, but it was hot. He was in some kind of desert, and he was lying in the setting sun. He looked to his left, seeing nothing but rolling waves of sand and small patches of sagebrush. Koa tried to remember what he was doing, and how he got here. To the right, he saw a poor looking shrub that was hanging over, providing beckoning shade. In the shade there was a small hole, and Koa remembered. He had been walking through the desert for a few days now, looking for a suitable place to live, and to find water. He had used his element to his advantage to provide himself shade while he slept through the day.
Koa traveled in the cool night temperatures, and slept through the day. Traveling at night wasn’t the best idea, but he was content with the heat of the day soaked into his body, to travel at night. And now, it was time to leave. Standing up, Koa shook his fur, ridding himself of a layer of sand. He turned and started to trot in the direction the sun was, moving around the hot rocks instead of stepping up and over them. Everything had a red-ish orange tint from the setting sun. The white wolf looked more yellow when he walked in the sun, but the shadows made him appear almost blue. Jaws opening wide, he yawned and shook his head, getting rid of the rest of the sleep that lingered in his mind. . Suddenly the left side of his body tingled and burned, and he recognized the feeling of being watched. Koa didn’t stop and ignored the feeling, but glanced over through his squinting eyes, trying to catch sight of who was stalking him.

In truth, Cove was not watching the other wolf. He was just, kind of, coincidentally, going in the same direction as he was. He had noticed the white wolf a few minutes ago, and while Cove was wary of approaching him, he was glad to finally see somebody. It had been days or even weeks since he had last seen a wolf, although probably he would have come across scents and such had he been traveling on the ground.
Cove's unintentionally fierce eyes were focused on the white wolf, his curiosity increasing by the moment. Who was he? Where was he going? Where was he from? Etc. But Cove's shyness held him back for quite a while from landing and approaching him.
Eventually, though, Cove's inquisitiveness egged him onward and he went into a dive, plummeting silently to the earth, where he landed and changed from his hawk form to his wolf form. He looked around; the sages were so high he couldn't see the white wolf and he remembered another advantage of being able to fly. The black wolf balanced on his hind legs a few times before he spotted a pair of snowy ears moving away from him, and he loped after them.
"Hey," he called as he rounded a large clump of heather and spotted the wolf. "Wait." He bounded forward excitedly, drawing alongside the stranger. But now that he was next to him he didn't really know what to say. He paused before saying, "Hi...I'm Cove."

Koa’s ears leaned back when he heard something and he stopped, turning his head back. His fur bristled quickly when he saw another wolf, a male wolf at that. It was instinct that he growled, but at the tone of the wolf’s voice he wasn’t a threat. For now at least. Koa turned and continued to trot, moving around the foliage that got in his way. He hopped over a rock, glancing over at the black and grey wolf when he drew alongside. Cove? That was an interesting name. “My name’s Koa. What exactly are you doing here?” He asked, shaking his head at a bug that landed too close to his eye. From laying in the sand and letting the bushes rub against him, Koa’s legs and underbelly were getting quite dirt, being a rather soiled brown color instead of white.
He was curious to know why there was another wolf in the desert. Koa was here because he was looking for water. In fact, he wasn’t even sure how he got here. He’d been running for a while and soon realized the forest he moved through gave way to a desert. It was rather peculiar, but he didn’t question it. The lands were strange. Koa suddenly pricked his ears forward and focused on a relatively large thorn bush. It started to waver and soon started to scrunch up and sink into the ground. By the time Koa reached it he had a nice walk way, praising himself for not losing control of his power due to his wary attitude toward the stranger.

"Nothing, really," the dark wolf answered. "Traveling. North. I just thought it was strange to see someone else out here--" he cut off as he leapt over a low-growing shrub, huffing as he landed. He turned his head slightly toward Koa, ready to return the question, but he was distracted by a rustling noise up ahead. He turned, hackles raised, ready to fight or literally fly from any enemy that might appear. As he watched, though, the bush making the noise shrank into the ground and he, awestruck, stopped in his tracks. "Whoa," he smiled, "I've never seen something like that before. I suppose you did that?" He caught up with Koa, glad to not only have found some company but some magical company as well. It had been a long time since he had been in the company of wolves with magic; he had always felt a kind of camaraderie with them when he came across them, although so far few of them had seemed to feel that sense of automatic friendship. They had taken some warming up. He guessed Koa would be no different.

Koa couldn't help but smile when Cove seemed to approve of his talents. "Yes, it's all I can do really. Shift the earth to aid me or make anothers day worse." He laughed inwardly at the thought of caving the earth in in front of Cove, just enough to make him loose his balance. Not enough to cause damage, just as a practical joke. But, he refrained, not wanting to create any ill feelings between the two. Who would want enemies over friends?
"I'm not exactly sure how I ended up here, but I was looking for water before heading north as well. Rumor has it there's more food up there, but rumors are--" he jumped over a shrub, "Rumors." He glanced over at Cove, "So are you...normal? Or are you part of the freak colony?" He smiled at the dark wolf to let him know he was joking. After all, Koa knew what it was like to be rejected like that, because of his powers. On his travels away from him pack and his past, he had began to make friends with a she-wolf but the second she saw what he could do she deemed him an enemy. Cove didn't seem like the wolf that would do that, but Koa didn't know him all that well.

They didn't notice her.
The small, jet black wolf sat about 30 yards away from the two other wolves. She watched them, a smirk on her lips. The sun was setting slowly, and the orange light made the female wolf seem like an eerie silhouette in the distance.
"Aren't you gonna go talk to them?" Shire asked, scurrying down to the sand. Cobalt's lifelong companion always tried to get her to talk to people. Cobalt simply shook her head at the ferret-like creature's question, not wanting to do anything but watch the two canines.
"Hush, Shire." Cobalt said, her voice smooth, like silk. The ermine then clawed his way up back to her shoulders, his beady black eyes flickering from his companion to the two strangers. He watched as Cobalt's eyes lightened a bright purple, then as a dark gray, black and violet wisp began to form behind the wolves. It then flashed forward, darkening the space around them from a moment to hide her entrance. Just as the wisp was swirling around the two of them, Cobalt darted over, sitting on her haunches in front of the pair. Her eyes still glowed with pure curiosity.
Shire held on for dear life, and quickly scurried to the ground between the wolf's paws. He, too, had a sly smile curled on his white lips. He contrasted from Cobalt, his white pelt against her black fur, his pink nose and his black eyes much different from his friend's. But they were the same altogether.
"Hello, there." She greeted, a hint of mischief darkening her voice. She was jet black, and it was hard to make out her nose, and her overall facial features. The only thing that really stood out were her pure violet eyes.

"Actually," he smiled as well, "I can do something. Not much, but..." He changed form into a gigantic grizzly bear, towering over Koa and blundering through sage bushes that had been taller than himself the previous moment. Then he became a raven, swooping around for the pure joyful freedom of flight, and of course because he couldn't help showing off a little. Next, a hare, darting between the shrubs with unmatched agility, and finally a butterfly, fluttering above Koa's head. He moved aside and returned to wolf form, landing nimbly next to the white wolf. "So...yeah." He grinned.
Just then, Cove caught sight of something dark out of the corner of his eye, but before he could turn to look a mist formed and rushed around and past the two wolves, solidifying into a small black wolf. His eyes wide, Cove was speechless for a few moments after she spoke, unable to really take in her bright purple eyes and the weasel that clung to her. Finally he spoke, "Hi...Nice entrance. He let out a short laugh. "I'm Cove."

Koa glanced over as if unfazed by the giant bear beside him. True it had startled him at first but he had trained himself not to show it. He watched carefully, stopping to watch what Cove did next. He became a raven, then a rabbit, then a butterfly, then a wolf again. The white wolf smirked, "Nice." He'd have to be sure to be able to make out the difference between Cove and a normal wild hare.
At the same time Cove did, Koa some something dark flicker. His hackles brushed up quickly and he turned his head defensively, ready to attack whatever was stalking them. The strange cloud moved in front of them and soon became a wolf. Standing tall and puffing his chest out Koa glared at the female wolf, his ears flattened to his head aggressively. What did she want and why was she here? He never lost eye contact with her, those bright purple eyes looked creepy when he couldn't see the rest of her face. Cove introduced himself but Koa remained silent. He himself wasn't 100% sure why he was suddenly aggressive, just something about the black wolf made him feel ill at ease.
His bristled fur didn't lay down, nor did he exhale to return to his normal appearance. How long was she following them? Koa was bigger then her but not by much, though in his mind he could see himself easily taking over her. Since of course, he could manipulate the earth, he could hold her down with vines. Or something to those lines.

Cobalt tilted her head when she saw one of the wolves get aggressive, though the other remained calm and thought she was no harm. She didn't mean any, but her instincts made her stand up and walk to the aggressive one. She circled him, then came to his front. She moved her nose to his chin, nudging it upward, and tracing her cold nose down his muzzle and down his neck, just to annoy him. "Don't be mean... I can create your worst nightmare, your worst fear... I suppose you wouldn't like that, would you?" She said, her voice like ice.
Meanwhile, Shire inspected the calm one, Cove. He crawled up his back, then made his way to his chest, and the crest of his head. He sat down in the small space between his ears, leaning down to look at him upside down. "I'm Shire, that's Cobalt." he introduced for the both of them.
Cobalt taunted the white wolf further, nipping at the end of his tail and pawing at his sides, just begging him to come at her. She always had a way of provoking others, but they couldn't bear hurt her. Her eyes and her voice just mesmerized them too much to make them get angry. She backed away from the male and looked at the friendly one, touching her nose to his in a greeting. She then ignored the aggressive wolf and began to pay attention the Cove.
"I saw you change to those animals," She said, "Enchanting, it really was." she complimented, though it was more of a curious comment than anything else. "As you probably heard, I can create your fears and nightmares, and turn into the black wisp you saw. I doubt you'd want to see a demonstration of my main power, would you? She asked, raising a mischievous ear.

Cove watched the black wolf intently as she walked toward Koa, but almost immediately her weasel friend came towards him and started to crawl all over him. His claws scratched him and tickled him and made him want to shake him off, but being able to turn into animals tended to make one kinder to them. "Good to meet you, Shire," he replied, smiling, and turned into a stoat. Shire fell on top of him and Cove wrestled with him playfully for a bit before breaking away and returning to wolf form in time for Cobalt to come greet him. He smiled as she approached and caught her scent when they touched noses, which would make it easier to track her in the future if he ever needed to. "Thanks," he replied to her compliment and couldn't help but grin. He was on a roll today. People were liking him. It was great! "I don't suppose I would like that very much," he answered her, "but I suppose to do that you would have to know what my worst fear is...and even I don't know that."

Koa jerked his head away when she touched him, baring his teeth and letting a deep chest rumbling growl. He watched her walk around him, she bit his tail and he lunged at her. He didn't bite her, but he threatened it. Being such a good hunter, he knew where to bite, which ones would kill quickly and which ones wouldn't. He wasn't much for attacking other wolves though, seeing as he shares their species. But this female was seriously pissing him off. "Don't. Touch. Me." He snarled when she pawed at him.
He didn't care if she could control fear. Cove was right, she needed to know what his fear was. And he sure as hell wasn't going to tell her his. He didn't even think about it, all he did was watch her as she walked over and nosed his newly found companion. He couldn't hold back a groan in disgust as they started to talk.
Koa wondered why he was standing here listening to them. Nothing was holding him here, except for the fact he didn't want to leave Cove by himself since he liked him. He looked at Cove, then at the she-wolf and shrugged inwardly. He growled once more at the female before trotting around her and leaving.
He wasn't going to stand and let her push him around. He was a big boy, so he made a big boy decision. After all, he still needed to find water, and he still needed to get some food into him. It'd been a few days since he'd had something to eat, but hunger wasn't the top priority.

"Indeed." She answered quietly, nodding. She despised that she had to know the fear to create it. Nightmares, no, she only had to be in physical contact with them while they slept, and she could recreate the scene as many times as she wanted to. Like she did to the only wolf, she circled him, inspecting his figure. When she came to his front, she nudged his muzzle upward with her own, touching her nose softly to his chest in acceptance. It was her usual "ritual" when she wanted to say that she liked the wolf and that she wasn't going to do any harm to them.
When she felt the breeze of movement, her head swung towards the wolf that was now walking away from the pair. She immediately turned to the black and violet wisp, and appeared again in her wolf form in front of the fleeing canine. "Don't leave now," She pleaded, though it was mischievous. "The fun's only started." Her eyes twinkled with a bit of charm and persuasion. She then touched her nose to his, the same way she had done to Cove, and walked back over to the other wolf. Her haunches swayed behind her charmingly, though she could only hope that the white wolf would return after her.
Shire, amused by the wolf turning to creature like him, darted up Cove's spine and sat between his ears again. He assumed this position on Cobalt's head as well, and he was taking a liking to the male. His white tail swayed, the tip lightly touching Cove's ears with each turn. He watched his companion follow the angered wolf, and laughed when he saw her use her charming look to try to get him to return.

The dark wolf's spirits lifted even higher at the further contact with Cobalt. Distracted by this, he only noticed that Koa had started to leave when the black wolf turned and called to him. He bounded after him, noticing that Cobalt again became a mist and barred his way. "Don't go," Cove came up beside him, nudging his shoulder lightly. He gave him a look that said, Stick it out, and said, "I'm sure you can get along." He had noticed that Cobalt seemed very seductive and while it bothered him on a not-fully-conscious level that she was acting in such a way with Koa as well as himself, it bothered him more that she was making his new friend want to leave. He glanced at Cobalt too, trying to ask her with his eyes not to provoke him. Taking a mediator role, as usual. He really didn't want a fight to break out, which seemed a real possibility at the moment. He didn't know which side he would take. He had known Koa for longer, but still, that was practically the same amount of time that he had known the black female. He would be at a loss.

The big white wolf felt better the further he got away from that she devil. Her cold voice echoed in his mind when she spoke about his greatest fear. The image of his sister appeared in his mind. She was smiling, happy. Then the next second, he saw her in a bloody pulp on the ground. He blinked hard to get rid of the image, and when he opened them he saw a sight he didn't want to see.
Koa snapped at Cobalt when she appeared in front of him. Did she want him to attack her? He bared his teeth at her when she touched his nose, and then felt something on his shoulder. He turned to see Cove giving him the, 'Suck it up', look. He glared at him, then at the she wolf as she walked in a certain way that supposedly was going to attract him. It didn't, but for Coves sake, "Fine." He murmered to the male, keeping his burning gaze on Cobalt. He really didn't like her. He didn't relax his stance, but raised his head and watched her little white weasle looking creature. He could make him a quick snack if he wanted to, but the thought of bringing something into his mouth that crawled over Cobalts body made him sick thinking about it.

Cobalt, a sly smirk on her maw, and an up-to-something look in her eyes, stopped in her tracks and crept towards Koa. Her ears her flat on her head, and her head was high, along with her tail. She traced the tip of her tail along his side, his muzzle, and his neck, teasing him ever so lightly. "So," She started, her voice less snappy now, less cold. "Let's start over." She circled him, again and again, her tail never leaving his pelt. She then looked over at Cove. It was obvious he had taken a liking to her, which happened often - she always had a way of making males swoon. But Koa, he held his ground, he didn't seem to fall for her simple persuasions. And that, oddly, made him attractive to her.
Shire immediately saw how infatuated Cobalt was with this male. He nipped at her paw, and ran off a few yards, out of earshot. Cobalt followed curiously. "Cobalt, he hates you. Are you messed up in the brain?" Shire hissed, his beady eyes narrowing. Cobalt simply watched Cove and Koa carefully, her head tilted. Shire growled, which was really just a simple squeak, and Cobalt seemed to snap from her daydreaming. "Cobalt," Shire whined, almost in a plead not to. Cobalt gave a sorry look and looked back up at the male wolves.
Shire sighed and gave up, sulking back over to the pair, over rocks and through the brush. Cobalt turned to her wisp form, appearing again near the two of them, this time at Cove's side. She said nothing, and Shire climbed onto her shoulders, looking at the two males with an anticipated look.

Cove nodded as Koa consented to stick around and he turned back to Cobalt, hoping she would pay him attention next, but to his unexpected dismay she began to circle the white wolf with intent in her eyes. His heart sank, his head and tail fell and his stature shrank overall. The thought that he must be pretty attracted to her to feel so rejected after knowing her for such a short time, crossed his mind for a brief moment but by then he was on to feeling sorry for himself. She looked at him and his tail fluttered, but she went back to Koa and that wave of self-pity crashed on him all over again.
Cove had never had a mate or a love interest, no one had really taken a liking to him. No one had had really meaningful conversations with him, romped with him, or even shallowly flirted with him until Cobalt came around. But then, he had never taken a liking to anyone else, either. It takes two, he shrugged inwardly, still feeling defeated.
He backed away a few steps into the shade of a large sage bush and lay down, pretending to be disinterested in Cobalt and Koa until she walked away from him, when he looked toward them and watched the white wolf, looking for any signs of attraction. He was glad to see that there were none, in fact, quite the opposite, but despite his hope that the two would not get along he still wished that they would not physically fight.

Koa quite literally snarled as she dragged her tail across him. He kept his eyes on her, his ears forward and his tail up in a dominant stance. He’d pin her down and scream at her if it meant she’d leave him alone, and just when he was about to lunge, her little furry companion ran off. They were talking and Koa looked at Cove. “You want me to stay for that?” He groaned, nodding his chin at the female. He had seen how Cove reacted when she paid attention to him, and watching her tease Koa must have been either annoying or disappointing. Just when he was about to say that nothing would happen, Cobalt appeared next to him.
The white wolf lowered his haunches down, his tail wagging in an irritated way along the ground, collecting dirt. He looked up. The sky was getting darker, the orange light barely touching anything in the desert. He could feel the air getting colder, and he was glad his fur was so thick year round. He suddenly collapsed onto his side and yawned. Koa was still tired but he knew he couldn’t hang around here for much longer. He sneezed when some sand touched his nose, and then leaned up to look at the pair. Just to annoy the she wolf, he decided to pretend she wasn’t there. “So Cove, do you come from these parts or have you no set home?” Koa himself was a traveler; he didn’t want to settle down with a pack. Friends, he didn’t mind so much, but they ended up slowing him down.

Cobalt glanced to her right, not turning her head or making any gesture to Cove. She noticed how pitiful he looked, and how disappointed he seemed. The slightest hint of a sympathetic smile flickered, and she touched her nose gently to his temple, just below his ear. She held it there for a moment before pulling away and nudging his chin upward, as if to say Cheer up. Just as it seemed like she felt attracted to Cove, now, she stood up and crept towards Koa, who was now on his side on the ground.
She lay down next to him, by his back, and placed her head gently on his shoulder. She smiled, knowing that he was trying to ignore her, she would just try to annoy him further. She had seen that trick so many times before, act like she wasn't there. Cobalt nuzzled his chin gently with the top of her muzzle, before closing her eyes and using him as somewhat of a pillow. She knew Koa wasn't going to let her stay like that for long.
She then opened her eyes slowly, drowsily. She didn't move from her position, her head on Koa's shoulder, but her eyes flickered to Cove. He, too, was laying down beneath a sage bush. She didn't know if he could see it through her black fur and face, but she smiled at him, not a mischievous or malicious smile - just a warm one, to say that he did have a chance. Just after Koa knocked some sense into her that they would never be together in any way or form. She noticed her companion curled up beside Cove. He had fallen asleep when he had gotten back from their little discussion. The little ermine looked like a white patch in Cove's fur, though his side rose and fell with each slow breath he took.

Cove shrugged at Koa's remark, but inwardly it bothered him. It was so obvious to them what he felt, a problem he had encountered before. There was no mystery about the young, straight-forward wolf, leaving nothing to be discovered. Where was the fun in that? He ought to be more aloof, he thought, like Koa. Well, not exactly like Koa...but yeah. He could try that.
Then Cobalt returned, her appearance jerking him out of his thoughts in time for him to realize that Koa was speaking to him and for Cove to get the gist of his question. "No," he replied, trying to ignore the way Cobalt touched his friend... He continued: "I was born further south and only recently left. It was actually much more desert-y even than it is here. Drier, more sand. God knows why my family picked that place to live. I hated it. So I left." He noticed the female's eyes were closed, which made him think twice. He guessed that she usually slept during the night, unlike Koa, which made him wonder what Koa would do. He had come to a fork in the road: stay with is friend Cove or get away from the black wolf he hated. Cove would be sad to see Koa go if he did, but then, he would be glad to have Cobalt to himself. Unless she went after him. He imagined that Koa would part ways with them soon but he had no idea what Cobalt would do. So far she had been so unpredictable.
Shire scampered over to him, and while Cove might have welcomed him earlier, now he was reminded of Cobalts's rejection of him. He looked over at her; she was looking at him, too, smiling at him in a way that lifted his spirits once again. When she looked away he turned back to Shire, who had curled up near him, and Cove, feeling friendlier toward him, took a stoat form as well, settling down to sleep.

Koa growled lowly when he felt Cobalt against his back. He glared angrily at her when she let her head rest on his shoulder. Even in the dark the black against white contrast was very distinct. He lifted his head and looked at Cove, listening to him talk. In the middle of his reply, Cobalt's muzzle rubbed against his chin and he lifted his head away from her. She sure was persistent, he had to give her that. "It is a rather odd idea to raise a pack in a desert," he said, "With there hardly being water and the great temperature changes between night and day." He thought about it for a few moments to himself, curious to know why someone would even attempt that. He glanced at Cobalt who now had her eyes closed. He groaned inwardly, why did she have to do this to him? Why not to Cove? The wold that actually likes her.
The white wolf made no move to get her off however, because he was debating on what to do next. If he convinced Cove to leave with him, who's to say she won't follow? He blinked slowly and growled again, this time more quietly. He laid his head on the ground, inhaling deeply before letting out a long sigh. He was tired, even though he had slept the whole day. Koa knew he had to get moving though, he still didn't have any water or food in his system, and being in the desert would take a terrible toll on his body. "Cove," He started, leaning up to rest on his belly instead of on his side. "I still have to go up north, you're welcome to join me, but we'd have to leave soon."
