As Howahkan walked through the desert, his pawsteps making almost no noise at all, he noticed many things. He noticed the songs of the crickets in the occasional shrub growing from the parched ground. He noticed the way the heat of the day absorbed by the ground, radiated up to his belly and warmed his paws. He noticed the refreshing breeze that brought him an infinite number of smells, some from far away, some from nearby.
What he did not notice were the stars. The night was clear and the sky huge, but while they tried so hard to attract the wolf's attention, he would not see them. He could not see them.
A plump, clumsy June bug buzzed aimlessly above his head, and he noticed that too. In fact he took great amusement in its conspicuous noise, simply begging for some insectivore to come snap up the little thing. Kan imitated the sound with his tongue, then leapt up and playfully, half-heartedly snapped at the place the noise was coming from, missing by a mile. The wolf's spirits were high this night.
He continued traveling until his sharp ears picked up very high-pitched squeals from nearby, and he realized that on the wind was the sweet scent of water. Now Kan noticed his thirst, and he picked his pace up to a trot, heading for the water source.
It was the same place from which the high-pitched sounds emanated. Now he could hear the occasional flap of a wing and he realized that there were bats flying about, snatching up the mosquitoes that mus breed in this pool. The thought of drinking water infested with mosquito larvae disgusted the wolf, but he knew a way to make it better. He approached the water and leaned down as if to lap at it, but instead he dipped his muzzle in a few times to send the larvae to the bottom. Then he drank his fill.
Kan then stood up, focused his mind on a task ahead, and sent forth a burst of short clicks in all directions. The sound waves bounced off his surrounding and returned to him, painting him a picture of a dusty spring a few yards off that bubbled out of a pile of rocks and formed a stream, which then pooled where he had drunk. The plantlife was especially plentiful here, considering they grew in the middle of the desert, and Kan was content with what he had found. This is a good place, he thought, and found a spot clear of stones where he made a scratch and then settled in for the night.

VALITRIX
Valitrix walked slowly in the cool night of the desert. She hadn't eaten in a few days, and was hoping to catch a jackrabbit. As she walked, she was constantly stopping to see if there were any signs of animals nearby. There were none.
So, her hunt had gradually become a simple walk through her territory. That wasn't a bad thing though, she did need to check the borders anyway after all.
Having been walking for a while, Valitrix became aware of how incredibly thirsty she was. This in mind, she quickly changed her course so she was heading in the direction of the spring by her den.
As she came closer to the spring, she became aware of a new smell, the smell of another wolf. She carefully slowed down even more, and almost tip-toed to the spring. It slowed her progress, but she eventually ended up behind the pile of rocks from which the spring flowed. Careful not to make a sound she peeked around the rocks and saw another, larger wolf sleeping by the spring.
Although the wolf was larger, Valitrix was sure she could sneak up on him and attack. Very sure of herself, Valitrix sneaked up behind the wolf, and leaped, aiming to hit him square on.

Kan, who had been drifting near the edge of sleep, suddenly became a little more alert. He had heard a noise, or felt an unnatural gust of wind, or smelled something, or...something. He wasn't quite sure. But now his ears, more sensitive to sound because of his blindness, were perked. He felt eyes on him and the fur on his back and neck prickled uncomfortably.
Suddenly he heard the sound of rocks rolling, and in his tension he reacted quickly. He rolled on to his back, ready to receive his attacker with outstretched claws, but he was hit before he could extend his legs, so he ended up only being able to sort of roll the creature off of him. This bought him time enough to leap to his feet and send out echoes, which showed him that his attacker was another wolf, which made him pause. He hadn't expected to find another wolf in the desert, and instead of going after her--he knew the wolf was female because her scent had fallen on him just when she had--he stood his ground defensively, waiting for her to make the next move.

VALITRIX
The wolf apparently had been paying more attention than Valitrix had thought, as when she jumped on him, he quickly rolled over on his back and pushed her off. She landed on the ground with a muffled thud, but quickly leaped up.
The wolf stood in front of her, in a defensive of stance. He seemed to be waiting for her to make the first move.
Without moving from her attack position, she growled at him. "Who are you and what are you doing here without my permission?" She asked, in a commanding tone. All while very ready to attack if the need were to arise.

Kan's tail swayed with mock amusement at the other wolf's inquiry. "Your permission," he chuffed disdainfully. "Why would I need your permission to be here?" Not that the answer wasn't obvious. He interrupted any answer she was about to give, "Oh, let me guess. This is your land. Your territory? A great alphess of a powerful pack?" He snorted. "I see no pack. I smell no others. I would hazard to guess that you are alone."
Howahkan had met so many wolves with this story. They had claimed a territory and defended it as if they had real power. An alpha was nothing without a pack for backup.
