Kurat glanced back at the bird with his good eye, "Hm? Yeah, everything's fine. Just hearing things I guess." His voice was low and silky smooth, many told him it was almost entrancing, but Kurat had no idea. Axis shrugged her concern off and went back to watching his blind side.Long, lean legs worked under the brute to keep his body in motion. The frail, dry leaves gave way under his weight and gave him only a muffled crunch sound as he moved along. His long tail snaked behind him almost like it was weightless, he brushed it along the trees as he moved. Fall was a time most considered beautiful, Kurat had no preferences in season, they were all the same to him. He had to admit that the temperature of fall and spring were much more tolerable than the blaze of summer and the frigid cold of winter. His fur was starting to thicken, preparing for the winter ahead, he looked shaggy. His mane was growing out a bit more as well, this worked out for him and his companion. Axis was nestled into his neck fur, keeping an eye out on his left. Kurat's left eye had been defective from birth, something about him didn't develop right and he didn't have an iris or anything. His father had tried to get rid of the deformity but only left his son with a set of three claw mark scars over his eye and eyelid.. Axis was always there to watch his blind spot, and for that Kurat was greatful. The monster was trudging forward almost like a zombie. He was unfocused and had a glazed look in his working orb. He paused breifly and his ears quirked. He glanced over his shoulder and saw nothing, though he swore he'd heard something. Axis stirred and hopped down his back and perched on his hindquarters. Kurat let out a low growl and turned his head and kept moving ahead, his pace just as slow as before. Axis hopped back to Kurat's mane and nestled back down. She eyed the beast carefully and spoke, her voice calm and low, sweet as honey, "Everything alright?"
The creature wandered deeper into the forest, enjoying the sound of the crunching leaves under his paw pads. His tongue slithered out to briefly lick over his muzzle, as his weary legs pulled him along. He'd been walking for so long, he couldn't remember the last time he'd slept. Everytime he closed his eyes his dreams turned to nightmares that he dared not mention, not even to Axis, who as far as he knew, was oblivious to his fitful rest at all. His eyelids were half closed and his pace was dragging. Soon his body would crash and he would rest at last. He snaked close to another tree, this time he slid the tip of his right hor against it. The sharp bone material dug into the bark rather easy. He grinned darkly to himself, satisfied. He lifted his head and kept moving, Axis fidgetted on his back. He stopped and glanced at her. Axis raised herself up and stretched herself before leaping off of Kurat's shoulders into flight. He knew she was going to feed, and he didn't worry, he knew she'd be back. He felt his own stomach churn and growl. He sighed, and scanned the area with his good eye. His nose tilted towards the sky and he inhaled, trying to pick up on something.
His ears quivered as he heard something darting toward him. He growled as a rabbit darted towards him, unaware of what it was running into. His eye glowed dimmly as he lowered himself into a crouch. The rabbit ran practically right at him. It veered at the last second and with a snarl, he leapt into action. He landed just short of the rabbit which annoyed him. He rasied himself up and dug his large claws into the soft earth as he ran. He was surprisingly fast for a half blind wolf. He chased the rabbit until he was close enough. He pounced one final time, landing on the rabbit and gripping its neck within his strong jaws. The rabbit let out a ear piercing screech, Kurat snarled in anger and gripped harder, killing it instantly. He dropped his kill and glanced around to make sure no one would challenge him, he saw no one. Kurat, satisfied, picked up his dinner and trotted off with it. He wandered into a shady spot and nosed the leaves out of the way and hungrily tore into his meal. Within minutes it was gone, and Kurat's muzzle was stained. He licked his lips and wandered over to a nearby stream. He closed his eyes and lapped up the cool liquid. He heard a farmiliar caw and saw Axis perched on a branch above his head. He licked the water from his maw and glanced around.
After that short spurt of luck, Kurat was growing drowsy. His eyelids were hanging low and his eyes were a dull crimson. It had been so long since restful sleep had craddled the male, he was growing very weak. He staggered aorund for a bit, his limbs stumbling beneath him, any who laid eyes on him now would think he was dying. This is how Kurat got any rest lately. He literally exhausted himself to the point he passed out. His limbs pulled him forward slowly, shuddering with each move. His tail drug behind him as he moved to a small clearing, almost like a nest. Axis lazily flew above the male and perched in a tree above the spot he was heading for. A powerful yawn ripped through him and he growled as it left him. He nearly stumbled over as he moved, but he managed to stay balanced. Axis watched him, concerned. He slowly crawled just into the nest like clearing. His limbs gave out and Kurat's eyes closed, he slipped into sleep.
It started almost as soon as his eyes closed, and in sleep this deep, the wolf had no choice but to face it. This dream started as most did, Kurat standing in a clearing, as a pup. He was with his siblings again, and his sweet mother. His brothers and sisters were all wrestling around, Kurat was about to join in when it happened. The happy dream his was having turned, drastically worse. Kurat was about to join his siblings when his father showed up. Bounding around like a crazy fool, his eyes glowing bright teal. He came up to his son and laughed like a maniac and said something about Kurat being cursed. Kurat was confused by this and his father said that he had cursed his son. Then his father proceeded to try and "fix" Kurat's blind eye. The dream was so realistic and was getting worse. His mother had tried to stop his father from gouging out his eye. Kurat then had no choice but to watch as his crazed father brutally killed his mother and his siblings. Kurat had no idea why he was left alive, but his father just looked at him and said that he was cursed again. That anyone close to Kurat was bound to suffer the same fate as his family. Then his father trotted off and laughed that crazy laugh. After that, the dream started over, growing more real everytime he had the dream. The thing that made it so bad, this was his reality once. Kurat had witnessed his father do these things, this dream had been real. Now for some reason it seemed he re-lived it every time he slept.
Axis watched her friend fight in his sleep, his limbs twitched and thrashed about. She flew down next to him and gently brushed her wing over his pained face. She gently tried to comfort him without waking him. It had no effect and so she was forced to watch him writhe in pain, for he had told her to let him sleep, no matter what.[/blockquote]
