Remember to look at the Alliance's plot thread, here!
The Aurora Caeli Alliance values freedom, hope, and courage. A loosely ranked pack, they tend not to stand on ceremony and allow lower-ranked wolves to question orders and always have free speech. No matter what a wolf's rank, they must be listened to and respected. The Alliance runs wild across the steppes, bowing to none. They are proud and brave, unafraid to fight, and won't let any other pack tell them what to do. Valuing courage and honour highly, those with spirit and fire will quickly gain rank.
Always optimistic, the Alliance puts a strong emphasis on morale and pack spirit, with an infectious and addictive sense of camaraderie. They believe in never giving up, and always looking forward to tomorrow.

Please note that all Command tier ranks, all Circle tier ranks, and the Dicapai are all classed as 'high ranks'. Anyone with a high rank should be active, respond to Pack Meeting threads, and act dignified and nice and stuff. Wolves who don't may have their rank taken away.
Rank Explanations
Members who wish to attain a higher rank can either wait until one becomes available and ask the Majara to promote them, or they can challenge a wolf to fight for their rank. The Majara then decides on a contest - it might be a fight, riddle contest, race, or anything else - and the two wolves may fight for the rank. Every Midwinter, a festival is held, and challenges are traditionally held around this time, but challenges can happen at any time.
TIER ONE - Command
These ranks are the wolves in charge of the pack. This tier contains the Majara, Diesti and Heir ranks.
This tier of ranks are in charge of leading and organising the pack.
MAJARA
The Majara is the leader. S/he makes decisions, though always consults the members first, and is there to keep the pack organised and working smoothly. S/he cannot be challenged except by the Diesti.
DIESTI
The Diesti is the second in command, and as such helps the Majara to keep the pack alive. While the Majara makes big decisions, the Diesti takes care of the day-to-day running of the pack; s/he makes sure that the Majara's orders are carried out, is there as a listening ear for any wolf with a problem, and acts as a point of contact between the Majara and the pack. When the Majara is not around, the Diesti takes command, and the Diesti will eventually succeed the Majara as leader.
HEIR
Chosen from an early age, the Heir (unless challenged) will someday lead the pack. S/he is chosen by the Diesti (though the Majara often has input), and acts as an apprentice leader; though s/he has no authority, it is her task to learn leadership well, so that she will be a good Majara someday. When the Diesti dies, steps down, or becomes Majara, the Heir becomes Diesti.
SECOND TIER - The Circle
This tier contains the Consiale, Azkar, Cercaethor, Aezel and Xira ranks. The Circle wolves act as a council to advise the Command wolves, and each is in charge of one of the departments of Foundation wolves. Most of the wolves in the pack report directly to a Circle member. All Circle wolves are equal in rank.
CONSIALE
The Consiales are strong, steady wolves who act as advisors to the Majara and Diesti, and help to look after the welfare of the pack. They act as advisors, but also as morale officers, helping to settle disputes and keep the pack happy. They also keep corruption in check by watching over the higher-ranked wolves. The two acting together can veto any decision of the Majara or Diesti, although if the Diesti and Majara act together the Consiales cannot stop them.
Any wolf who has ever held the Consiale position cannot challenge for Diesti - the Consiale position is supposed to be a level-headed advisor, not a stepping stone to higher rank.
Though it's the Lupiar and the Lupiar Dicapai who report to the Consiales, anybody can become Consiale. Usually, however, it's a Lupiar wolf.
AZKAR
The Azkar is the head warrior of the pack; the Aktata report to them. They are in charge of keeping the pack's battle skills sharp through training, advising the Majara on battle strategy, and leading the Aktata in border patrols and guarding camp. They are the first to respond to a threat, and often lead a patrol of Aktata into battle. When the Majara or Diesti is in command of a battle, the Azkar tends to lead the charge, or closely advise them.
CERCAETHOR
The Cercaethor is the lead hunter, organising hunting patrols and practise sessions, and is usually chosen because s/he is the best hunter in the pack. S/he sorts out hunting rotas and ensures that the pack has sufficient prey.
AEZEL
The Aezel wolf is the connection to other packs; they are an ambassador, representative and diplomat - and also a spy and a scout. They must be fast and stealthy enough to spy and scout, and smart and tactful enough to speak to other packs. They are an explorer and traveller, and the go-to for knowledge about the world.
XIRA
The Xira is the head healer of the pack, making sure that the pack is healthy and helping to patch up injured wolves. They command the Xirienne, helping to organise them and also teaching and guiding them with their years of experience. As well as healing the pack's bodies, the Xira also heals their hearts; s/he is a counselor and philosopher, and helps the Consiales keep up the pack's morale. She is the go-to for help and comfort. S/he must have a good memory for herbs and problems and be a good listener, and as such, s/he is also the keeper of the pack's history and lore.
TIER THREE - THE FOUNDATION
These wolves make up the bulk of the pack. They are the ordinary members. This tier contains the Dicapai, Lupiar, Xirienne, Cirrara, Venata, Aktata and Litana ranks. All Foundation wolves are equal in rank, except for the Dicapai, who have authority within their chain of command.
DICAPAI
These six wolves act as assistants, deputies and bodyguards to the Circle wolves. There is one from each of the Foundation ranks; a Lupiar Dicapai (reports to Consiales), Litana Dicapai (reports to Consiales), Aktata Dicapai (reports to Azkar), Venata Dicapai (reports to Cercaethor), and Xirienne Dicapai (reports to Xira). They are often chosen to lead hunts, patrols and practise sessions.
LUPIAR
The Lupiar are all-rounders, wolves who were not drawn to any particular Circle rank. Often wolves with unusual powers or abilities become Lupiar, as the rank gives them the freedom to use those powers without being constrained to a small set of duties. The Lupiar are level-headed multi-skilled wolves able to give backup and help to any other wolf, and do whatever needs doing to keep the pack running smoothly. They report to the Consiales, and they often do the Consiales' work in the pack, sorting out disputes, looking after camp, and advising the pack members with their general good all-round knowledge, just like the Consiales advise the Command tier.
XIRIENNE
The Xirienne are the healers, helping to treat sick or injured wolves. They look after the pack in every way, from giving herbs to help a headache to saving the life of a wolf who was badly injured in battle, and can also act as counselors. Some have healing magic, but others are simply kind wolves with a good knowledge of herbs. They report to the Xira, or to the Xirienne Dicapai.
CIRRARA
The Cirrara are the runners, scouts and messengers, constantly patrolling, exploring, scouting, taking messages, and sometimes even spying. They tend to be fast, tactful, and have good memories. They report to the Aezel, or to the Cirrara Dicapai.
VENATA
The Venata are the hunters. Their job is to keep the pack well fed. The Venata are quick, stealthy, and good at teamwork. They tend to work together to take down large prey and as such the Venata are a tight-knit team.
They report to the Cercaethor, or the Venata Dicapai.
AKTATA
The Aktata are the warriors of the pack. They train often and respond to any threat to the pack, whether it be an enemy pack or a bear. They guard camp and escort wolves when they go out on hunting patrols or ambassadorial missions.
They report to the Azkar, or the Aktata Dicapai.
LITANA
The Litana are mentors and teachers. They look after and train the pack's young. They keep the younger wolves out of trouble, ensuring they have adequate food and water and bedding, and send them to the Xirienne if they're under the weather. They teach the Comitan about hunting, fighting, magic and history, help the Scirion to find mentors.
They report to the Consiales, but often work closely with the Xira and Aezel - the keepers of the pack's knowledge and lore.
There are no Litana-Scirion; one must take another Foundation rank for at least three years before becoming Litana, so as to give the Litana wolves the necessary experience to teach the young.
TIER FOUR - YOUNG
These wolves are the young ones of the pack. Their only duties are to play, learn, and grow. They are low-ranked due to their inexperience, but still respected; these wolves might one day be the next Circle. This tier contains the Scirion, Comitan and Filin ranks.
SCIRION
Scirion are in training to become Foundation wolves. They are split into five groups - Aktata-Scirion, Venata-Scirion, Cirrara-Scirion, Xirienne-Scirion and Lupiar-Scirion - depending on what they want to become. Each Scirion has a mentor, who can be any wolf in that chain of command - an Aktata-Scirion can be mentored by any wolf from the Azkar down to the youngest Aktata. The Scirion assists their mentor with their duties, and in return, the mentor gives the Scirion training. Scirion tend to be by their mentor's side always, and can go anywhere within the territory just as a Foundation wolf can, but are usually kept away from responsibility or large battles.
Scirion are trained mostly by their mentor, but may also have an alternate teacher if they need training in an area which their mentor cannot provide, eg. a winged wolf must learn how to fly.
COMITAN
The Comitan are the young trainees of the pack. They are given a basic grounding in all subjects by the Litana. Though they don't have free reign of the territory - it's too dangerous for young wolves to go out on their own - they are often taken exploring with the Litana. They are given enough knowledge in all subjects to survive, before they specialise and become Scirion.
When the Litana feel they are ready to become Scirion, the Comitan choose which path in which to specialise, are given mentors, and move on to the Scirion rank. The Heir is chosen from among the Comitan; if chosen, they simply graduate to a Heir position rather than a Scirion position.
FILIN
These cubs are too young to train, and spend their days playing, sleeping, eating and getting under everybody's paws. Newborn cubs are born into the Filin rank. When the Litana decide they are mature enough to begin training, they graduate to the Comitan rank.
TIER FIVE - RETIRED
This tier is made up of those wolves who are retiring, temporarily or permanently, from their duties. They are afforded great respect, but they have no authority to command. This tier contains the Aeldsti, Skari and Bolani ranks.
AELDSTI
These wolves have served their pack throughout their life, but have gotten too old to continue their duties, so retire to the Aeldsti rank. They are respected and looked after because of their previous life of service, and also their age, wisdom, and experience. Many wolves, even the highest ranked, come to them for advice for the same reasons. The Filin often beg them for stories; they have seen it all, and tell the best (and the tallest) tales!
SKARI
These wolves are Aeldsti who are unable to perform their usual duties of advice and storytelling, either because they are so old they have lost their memory or sanity, or because they are sick, weak and close to death. They are looked after and watched closely by the Xirienne.
BOLANI
These wolves are wolves who have needed to temporarily retire from their usual duties because of sickness or injury. They can be anybody, from the Majara down to the most junior Comitan; any wolf who cannot continue normal life because of sickness or injury is placed temporarily in this rank. If they are ranked as Dicapai or above, a second-in-command fills their duties for a while. Bolani have no duties, so they need worry about nothing except getting better. They are looked after by the Xirienne, and are expected to stay in camp for their own safety. Those expecting cubs usually take this rank until the cubs have become Comitan.
TIER SIX - THE DISGRACED
This tier is reserved for prisoners, law-breakers and disgraced wolves. This tier contains the Humilia, Kazenski and Jevan ranks.
HUMILIA
Humilia are demoted wolves, who have proved themselves unworthy of their rank. They are a disgraced member of the pack. If they prove themselves loyal and worthy, they are eventually promoted back into the Foundation tier; further disloyalty will earn them exile.
KAZENSKI
Kazenski are wolves of the Aurora Caeli who have broken the pack's laws or seriously disgraced themselves. They are unable to leave camp, and are the lowest ranked wolves in the pack. They are constantly under guard. Kazenski remain Kazenski until they have been trialled and judged, and either made Humilia or exiled.
Despite the disgrace of this rank, they are wolves too. They cannot be treated too harshly, and are still deserving of food and water and shelter.
JEVAN
Jevan are prisoners, captured from outside the pack. Like the Kazenski, they await trial for whatever it is they were captured for - trespassing on Aurora Caeli territory, maybe, or attacking an Aurora Caeli member. If they are prisoners of war captured off other packs, often they will be ransomed. They live in a small cell-den and are guarded by the Aktata. They are not allowed out except for exercise and are given only enough food or water to live.
Alliance Threads
There are some important threads in the Alliance that you may want/need to respond to. They are basically opportunities for the whole pack to get together and have an excuse to have a thread. The pack can function as one. Pack threads are also the pack's way of responding to threats. They will be marked out, so don't worry about missing one!
Pack Meetings
If there's an invasion, a disaster occurs that affects the pack, there's an important event, or it starts raining cake, then the Majara, Diesti, and any Circle member all have the authority to hold a Pack Meeting to discuss what to do about the invasion/disaster/event.
Pack meetings might also be held now and again just for the fun of it, so all the pack members can get together and feel pack-ish and there can be lots of camaraderie and yayness. Any excuse for a thread.
If a pack meeting is held, then you really ought to respond to it, especially if you're in a high rank. Those who frequently don't respond to pack meetings may lose their high ranks.
Celebrations!
The pack may not stand on ceremony, but parties are a whole other ball-park. When the pack wins a battle, when we survive some really horrid trials and tribulations, when a wolf is promoted (especially when a Filin becomes a Comitan or a Comitan becomes a Scirion, and especially especially when a Scirion finishes their training and is deemed worthy to be a full member of the pack), when good stuff happens... any excuse for a party!
When an excuse for a party is found, a celebration thread will be held. These threads also serve as the Alliance's equivalent of promotion ceremonies - the Majara will make a short sort-of-speech about the wolf getting promoted and to what rank and how awesome they are, (and if they're Comitan being promoted to Scirion then who their mentor will be), and then everybody will cheer and celebrate.
Obviously, if the celebration is in honour of you/your promotion, you really ought to be replying. Otherwise, they're optional but recommended threads... but parties are so much fun everybody will reply anyway, right?
Rallies
If there's an invasion/earthquake/terrible thing/it starts raining cake, then any Circle-tier or Command-tier rank (except the Heir) can start a Rally thread, rallying the Alliance members to respond to the event. (For instance, if we were getting invaded, the Azkar might start a thread gathering all the fighting wolves of the pack, telling them about the threat, and sending them off to fight).
If you're involved in the thread or if your rank is relevant, please do respond. (For instance, a pack hunt to stock up on food supplies for the winter would only be relevant to the Cercaethor and Venata). If not, it doesn't really matter - if you want to, go for it; if not, there's no need.
Challenges
Those wolves who wish to challenge a higher rank for their rank should mark their thread with [rank name challenge]. (For instance, a wolf wishing to challenge for the Xira rank might name their thread "Ambitions [Xira challenge]"). The wolf you are challenging should reply to the thread, either stepping down from their rank or saying that they will fight to keep the rank. If they wish to fight to keep the rank, the Majara will then reply, setting the terms of the challenge (how the two wolves will compete - it might be a race, fight, hunting competition, riddle contest, whatever you like - and what they will have to do to win). The wolves will compete and the winner will get the rank.
Remember that challenges are IC threads, so it all has to work IC. A good format would be the challenger howling their challenge, the other wolves trotting up and making their declarations, and then the Majara saying the challenge.
Please don't reply unless you are the challenger/wolf being challenged/Majara. If you are, please do reply. A challenger should start the thread if he/she wishes to challenge, and will need to stay active in it for its duration. The challenged wolf will also need to reply to it and stay active for its duration. If either wolf ceases to reply to the thread or doesn't respond at all, then the other wolf will automatically win the challenge and the rank.
Only the Foundation and Circle tiers can challenge for ranks.
The Festival
This is held annually, at Midwinter. This is when most challenges are held. The pack will have a big feast, there will be speeches about how awesome the pack is, and there will be entertainment (displays of magic, songs, poetry, etc etc.)
Before the Festival, a pack hunt thread will be held to provide the feast - this is just an optional-to-reply-to, everybody-join-in thread where everybody can hunt together and have fun.
This thread will also be a sort of warning thread that the Festival is coming up. Once the Pre-Festival Hunt is up, please PM the Majara if you want your wolf to be doing something at the Festival (challenging for a rank, singing a song, doing a magic display, making a speech, etc).
The Majara will start the thread and everybody can reply generally enjoying themselves, eating the feast, chatting, and so on. The Majara will announce any challenges/songs/poems/magic displays/speeches, and this is your cue to make the post. Then everybody else can post responding and applauding and everything.
This is a whole-pack thread. Please do reply to this thread, if at least to show that your wolf turns up. It's an important thread for the pack, and your wolf could lose their rank if they don't - especially if they're challenged.
Scirion-Mentor Matching
We need to get each Scirion in the pack matched up with a mentor who will teach him/her IC. This mentor is the wolf the Scirion reports to in event of trouble, and the two should have threads together where they train.
When you join the ACA as a Scirion your name will be put up here as 'in need of mentor'. If a wolf wishes to mentor your character, he/she should PM me (the RPer of the Majara) and you (the RPer of the Scirion in question).
Being a mentor is an honour in the pack, as a mentor holds the future of the pack in his/her paws. The bond that grows between a mentor and Scirion is usually very strong and most remain friends for life.
Mentors should be people comfortable with playing out the 'teaching' threads. The character will also need to be on the path the wolf is aspiring to (for instance, a Venata-Scirion will need either a Venata, Venata Dicapai, or Cercaethor to mentor them; a Lupiar will need a Lupiar, Lupiar Dicapai or Consiale to mentor them; an Aktata-Scirion will need an Aktata, Aktata Dicapai or Azkar to mentor them; and so on.)
