A dark paw gently stepped on the thin ice, trying not to break the layer above the freezing water. A she-wolf looked longingly across the vast of water. Not knowing what she wanted or where to go. Weather she was wanted, or just another outcast. As she looked across the rippling water, the ice beneath her warm paws began to crack. She was so lost in thought that she hadn't even noticed. She continued to stand there, and the ice began to give way under the heat. Shadow was still unaware of the breaking ice until she fell face first into the freezing, black water. The she-wolf struggled to get out of the water scratching fiercely at the ice around her. Her paws were just constantly slipping, and just when she was about to give up her small, but strong claws managed to get a grip. Panting heavily the dark wolf heaved herself on to the ice. She sat there for a minute ,and began shaking violently, she knew if she didn't find warmth soon she would die.

Ciel's face was tight with boredom. He hadn't seen a soul in days, so what the hell was he doing back in the tundra? Last week he met two other wolves, one a female, the other a strange male with a weasel thing as a pet. Or a friend. Who cared. The large lumbering male padded through the cold terrain, his paws numb from walking so much, but otherwise warm and unharmed. Lifting his nose, he sniffed at the air, catching wind of something. Another wolf? Curious, the white wolf upped his speed from a walk to a brisk trot. The closer he got to the well known frozen water way, the stronger the scent was. Lookey here, Ciel. Your nose hasn't lead you astray just yet. He said to himself. Literally. Ciel, since he was so violently attacked, cannot speak. His throat held the scars to prove it. Instead, he talks to others through their minds. He cannot hear them speak back, but he can project his voice into their heads, mess with them. It's really the only way he can talk. Shaking his mighty head, he bounded up a small hill and stood on top, looking down at the ice layered water. Ciel's bright eyes caught sight of the wolf he had scented dragging herself out of a hole. Obviously she fell through. Fearing the worst, the male made a beeline toward her, reaching the she-wolf in seconds.
The very first thing Ciel did was gently press his nose against hers. This was the only way he could get into her mind to talk. Are you alright? What happened, why are you on the ice? It's dangerous. The wolf said telepathically. Not caring for every ones "personal-bubble" Ciel carefully nudged the shaking female across the ice and onto solid ground. He wasn't going to risk falling in himself. The white wolf nuzzled into the darker wolf's wet fur, licking her cheek to get some of the excess water off. She needed to get warm, he knew that much. But he didn't want to tread upon grounds that would cause her to attack him. So, he carefully rubbed against her to help dry her off, shuddering a bit at the cold.

Shadows response was a soft glance into the males eyes and a small whimper. She was not very good with other wolves they were usually mean or just ignored her. She tried to stand, but was to tired so she laid her head down and closed her eyes. The dark female lay there listening for paw steps in the snow leading off into the world to leave her there, alone. Her breathing finally became normal, she calmed down, and fell asleep covering the little spike on her nose with her paw.

Ciel waited for a response, but instead the dark wolf gave him a sullen look and a small cry. The usually cruel and harsh wolf was now concerned for this stranger as she struggled to stand and refused to speak. Just rest, he said softly into her mind, suddenly feeling the need to care for her. The emotion that ran through his scar racked body was unusual. Naturally, he would have helped her out of the ice and left her to fend for herself. But there was something that compelled him to stay. And in truth, it bothered him. Ciel didn't want to stay, but seeing the she-wolf so pathetic looking it tugged at his normally cold heart. The male carefully laid down against her back, curling his body to form a C shape around her. His tail covered her hind legs while his own were against her back, and he pushed his front legs under her chest and back to bring her close. The white wolf then held his head over her shoulders and licked at her neck. The sudden affection toward her was irritating, but he couldn't find the will to get up and leave. You're alright. You're safe. The male said voicelessly, and he meant it. His eyes scanned the area with such ferocity that his look and presence alone would scare anything off. Ciel sighed heavily and nuzzled into her wet cold fur, waiting for the dark wolf to wake up.

The she wolf woke up, dazed, not knowing how long she had been out. Then remembering what had occurred earlier she realized how warm she felt. Shadow looked at the body keeping her warm. She stared at the white male nervous. "Thank you." was all she could think to say. She slowly stood up staggering in the snow. "I-I hope I wasn't too much of a pest t-to you." she stuttered lowering her head. The female sighed thinking she had caused more trouble than she was worth. She then lifted her eyes slowly to meet the the males.

Ciel had dozed a bit while the female was asleep, but it wasn't a deep slumber. It was the natural nap wolves took. Close your eyes, sleep for a few minutes, then wake up. The male had repeated this, wary of predatory eyes. He was no longer concerned, for he knew that his musky odor had traveled downwind, letting the other wolves know he was here. And very bad tempered. The brute shifted and opened his eyes when the she-wolf stirred. A black moist nose pressed against her shoulder when she looked at him, a sign that he was only here to help. At her thanks, Ciel nodded, sitting up and uncoiling himself from her so she had freewill to stand. And when she did, she trembled. But that was to be expected, so he didn't worry that much. Then, the female began to stutter, and he feared she had brain damage or something along those lines. But he was getting ahead of himself, and Ciel forced his nerves to calm. She was just cold, that's all.
You weren't a pest. You made a mistake, and I helped. If I thought you a pest I would have walked on. Ciel spoke to her mind and stood, shaking his body hard to rid himself of the water from the she-wolf's pelt. When he righted himself, he met eyes with the other wolf. She was pretty, with a strange little spike on her nose. Tch, weird. Despite what she said and what he said, he offered the Fae a smile. It's dangerous to be out here alone. I'm Ciel. The white wolf tucked one paw under his chest and bowed low to the ground in front of her. It was a pleasure saving your life.

"I'm Shadow." she said. When the male bowed in front of she did something she hadn't done in what seemed like forever, she smiled. Feeling a little embarrassed at his kindness, the dark female thanked him again. Not knowing what else to say, she sat down and began to gently lick her left forepaw. While licking she studied his scars and noticed he had a large one across his neck, but decided not to ask about it. After she licked her paw she moved down to her tail where there were three small spikes. Shadow licked the spikes and said, "Weird, huh?"

Ciel's ears stood erect at her name. Shadow. That was a nice name, though he could recall meeting a Shadow in the past. Of course the previous wolf had been male and, contradictory to his name, was white in color. Who cares if it was a common name? It suited the Fae. His golden eyes were fixated on her when she smiled and thanked him again, and in return, he nodded. His jaw clamped shut and he tucked his head into his chest when a sudden random wind tore between them, sending shards of cold snow, threatening to stab the wolf's eyes. It was gone as quick as it came and Ciel looked South, watching the wind blow a cloud of powder snow around. The male's gaze shifted from the snow to the female who was now grooming herself. Okay, that was strange. Ciel leaned his weight back and forth onto each of his front legs, looking longingly at the more, grassy part of the Tundra. He could definitely go for some mice right about now. The white wolf paid no mind to the Fae as she licked herself, finding himself feeling a bit odd. As if he was intruding on her bath time. Her voice is what drew his attention back and he turned to look at her, noting the spikes on her tail. Ciel closed his mouth hard so he wouldn't expose his sensitive teeth to the wind. Not weird, just different. From time to time Ciel would try to make his mouth form the words his mind projected, and occasionally his jaw would drop. But now like a time like this, he just kept his mouth shut when he spoke, finding no use of using it to try and appear normal.

"Hmm," she mumbled thinking," are you this nice to every wolf? Its been awhile since another wolf was kind to me." She glanced down at her paws as a small snowflake landed in between them. The dark wolf's coat began to gather little snowflakes as they gently fell from the sky above. "Come on, I know a place we can go in case the snow gets too heavy." she said standing up and turning, about to walk off.

Ciel’s ears twitched at her question and he scrunched his face up. Actually no. And, no offense to you, I’m not sure why I’m acting this way toward you. I don’t like helping. He admitted, rather nonchalantly. It was true, the last wolf he met he had forced her to the ground and nearly beat her to submission. He didn’t have to hurt her, for the first thing she did was expose her belly to him, but if circumstances were different there definitely would be fighting. Turning his nose to the sky, he let a few flakes melt on his muzzle before he dropped his head and scratched them away with his paw. Golden hue eyes hooked on the Fae when she stood and spoke. He scoffed at her but stood anyway, finding that he better humor her rather than ignore. Ciel didn’t care much for weather. He would curl up in a ball right here and get buried in the frozen blanket then dig his way out. In the past he experimented and found that snow didn’t melt when it touched him, nor did it seep through his fur. So, he concluded that he kept his warmth under his fur and making himself as small as he could would trap it all and he could sleep with ease, no matter the weather. Lead the way, dearest. He wondered what his telepathic voice sounded like to her. Was it deep like it had been when he could speak? Or was it different? Maybe she heard her own voice. Who knew, he didn’t bother asking.

The dark wolf made a face at his response, not allowing the male to see of course. 'Why would he not know why he was being nice, and to me of all wolves.' She thought silently while leading the way through the growing snow. A little while later she was making her way up a steep mountain, and glanced back to make sure the male was still there. She didn't want to be left alone again. Soon they were at the mouth of a good sized cave. It was dark and cool, but the she wolf stayed there often when there was a bad enough storm. She glanced at the white wolf again with warm, gold eyes and said, "I hope it's okay." She gave a little smile and walked inside.

Ciel trotted after her, his face bored and covered with snow he didn’t bother shaking off. He didn’t speak, he didn’t make a sound, but his bright yellow eyes were locked on the cave in the distance. He waged a war against himself, betting the odds that that is where they were going. And, he won against his voice, stopping next to Shadow when she stood at the cave entrance. He was skeptical. Usually he wasn’t one to go wandering into caves that didn’t belong to him, and he hesitated joining her. Her voice rang out and he looked to the landscape, grinding his teeth as he noted the snow was growing pink and orange. The sun was setting, and since it had just begun snowing, it was going to be cold. Really cold. And typically he could tolerate the cooler temperatures, but he felt lazy. Since there was shelter in front of him, he’d stay here. It’ll do for tonight I suppose. He walked past her, glancing back once to meet her eyes. The slowly setting sun cast a orange light on him, mixing with the dark red shadows the cave cast, which in turn, made his eyes seem to glow. Though I suggest finding a different shelter in the future. This can be too welcoming to the uninvited. Ciel turned around and moved to the back of the cave, sniffing practically everything. He met the back of the cave and let his eyes skim the mouth of the cave. It didn’t go too far back, which made him feel more at ease. Circling a few times, as most canines do, Ciel plopped down, leaning against the cave wall. His legs were tucked up against his body, his tail covering his exposed toes. The white wolf gave Shadow one last glance before tucking his head against his belly and letting his nose rest under the tip of his tail. Is it weird? Talking to someone without a voice? He asked, closing his eyes and nuzzling into his soft fur.

Shadow flinched at the sudden question. "Eh, not really." she said looking across the the snow covered ground at the red orange horizon. She lied down a few feet away from the mouth of the cave, her head on her paws. Not exactly tired her golden eyes fluttered every now and then as she was lost in deep thought. She wished dearly to make conversation with Ciel, but didn't want to bother him. After awhile she tried to go to sleep, for she did not like to be left alone with her thoughts.

Ciel’s ear swiveled to hear her and he scoffed mentally. Does that mean I am to assume you’ve met another like myself? He asked, trying to burrow himself further into his pelt. He listened to the sound of her laying down and was curious as to why she wasn’t closer. He’d shared his warmth and company earlier, why didn’t she trust him? He saved her life for crying out loud. The male suddenly pulled his head out from against his belly and looked at Shadow, wondering if the reason she didn’t make small talk with him was because he wasn’t looking. Well, out with it. You look like you want to talk. His voice in her head was a playful taunt and he didn’t mean to create any ill feelings between the two. OCC; Word count; 133 Muse; 10.5% Tags; Darkwolf! "No, but I've seen alot of weird stuff in my life so I guess it's not weird compared to those things." Shadow replied. When she heard the males voice in her head again she looked back not knowing what to say. Then the dark wolf looked back towards the horizon and said "It's beautiful, isn't it? Glistening on the snow." She sighed and stood up. Shadow walked farther back into the cave and to the right wall. She turned a few times and lied down, her head on her paws once again. "Don't you think so?" she asked curiously.

Ciel was a bit more displeased with her answer then he expected. He didn’t like to be compared to other things, so he scrunched his face up a bit. His eyes locked onto hers when she looked toward him. She seemed confused and he raised his head, ears stiffening to catch any words. Despite his attention toward her, she turned her gaze out of the cave. The male growled quietly, wanting her to at least look at him. He went to speak but she interrupted with a question about the sunset. His eyes seemed to drag unwillingly toward the mouth of the cave and he looked irritably at the snow. Ciel yawned when she stood, not bothering to answer her question. The fae plopped down closer to him, but still not with him, which made him almost throw a fit. Her voice hit his ears and he rolled his eyes. Scenery really doesn’t impress me anymore. I’ve seen too much. You see that sunset? Think of it this way. If you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. Though he wasn’t particularly interested in her choice of conversation, he wasn’t completely bored with it either. The white brute sneezed and then rubbed his nose on his knee to make the itching feeling go away. He turned a sharp gaze on the darker wolf. Why were you on the ice?

"I guess." she said. When Ciel's voice rang in her head again she turned her head towards him, not making eye contact. "Once I saw a wolf cross it. Ever since then I've wanted to try, but could never get the courage. Today I was going to try, but I kind of zoned out. Eh, I guess he was just light footed." Shadow waited for the male to reply. She thought he was going to criticize her, but she didn't care. She has always been criticized.

Ciel’s nose crinkled when the Fae turned to him, but still refused to look him in the eye. Sure he knew he was intimidating, but it was common respect to look at the one you were talking to. Becoming irritated, he laid there impatiently while she explained why she made the foolish decision to go out on thin ice. The male held in a scoff before mentally telling her, You wanted to do something an idiotic wolf somehow managed to accomplish? Some dream you have. Okay, that his voice shouldn’t have been so rough and his attitude could use a little work, but hey, he wasn’t your next door neighbor. He didn’t play well with others. Shaking his head at the cold, he turned and reburied his face into his tail. I’d suggest getting some sleep. With what you’ve been through today, you could use it. With that, the white male grew silent and slowly awaited the sun to rise.

Shadow turned her head towards Ciel, "Alright." She set her head on her paws, closing her eyes. While she waited to fall asleep she thought about how stupid it was to try and cross that water. The dark wolf pulled her tail closer to her body for a little more warmth.
